Health, Sport, and Physical Education are highly valued at IJGS. The knowledge and skills gained in these subjects help students to lead a healthy lifestyle and provide the background knowledge and interest to pursue a health related career through further study if they choose. The programs emphasise enjoyment of physical activity and learning of skills that will allow them to remain physically active throughout their lives.
The House system presents all students with opportunities to compete in sporting and performing arts activity, with keen rivalry at various inter-house carnivals and events. IJGS has five Houses named after former headmistresses: Armitage, Carter, Connell, Hunt and White.
Our students are keen participants in:
- Artistic & Rhythmic Gymnastics
- Cross Country
- Skipping (Jump Rope for Heart/Invigorators)
- Skiing (annual excursion)
- Touch Football
- Outdoor education (abseiling, canoeing, orienteering, etc)
- Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Our double basketball court gymnasium is used extensively for Health and Physical Education classes, training and matches. Both are easily seen from the mezzanine viewing area.
The gym’s international standard ceiling height also makes it ideal for competition Gymnastics and Volleyball. Badminton is another very popular sport played in the gym throughout the year.
The Athletics Oval includes a 400 metre running track, Long Jump pit, Discus and Shot Put circles, as well as training areas for Javelin and High Jump. The School’s facilities include a full size Hockey and Touch Football field, four fields for training, and two cricket pitches.
Our five-lane, 25 metre heated pool is used for squad training and swimming lessons.
For tennis, netball and volleyball playing students who compete on different surfaces and at various times, the School has plexi-pave tennis courts (with lights), synthetic grass tennis courts, plexi-pave and synthetic grass netball courts, and a synthetic grass volleyball court.
Coaches of all IJGS sports teams are experienced and well qualified (most are Level 1 or Level 2).
